Hans Kraus’ 1988 Letter

Hans Kraus together with Fritz Weisser was one of the pioneers of climbing in the Gunks. He is considered one of the fathers of sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. In the 1940’s, he made the first connection between exercise and health, considered controversial at the time. He campaigned for better physical exercise programs for children, making headline news in the 2nd half of the 1950’s. President Eisenhower established the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports based on Kraus’ studies on children’s fitness.

He also wrote one of the first letters to expand climbing opportunities in Minnewaska State Park Preserve:

Hans Kraus letter to Minnewaska about rock climbing, 1988.
