June 6, 2026—Trapps Trail Work Day – Volunteers Needed

Trapps Stewardship Day Plus GCC BBQ!

WHEN: Saturday, June 6
  • 8:45am—3:00pm: Stewardship Work Day
  • 3:00pm—5:00pm: Climb / Boulder
  • 5:00pm—8:00pm: Annual GCC Spring BBQ at Preserve Visitors Center
A stewardship rain date is scheduled for Sunday, June 14.

THANK YOU! WE HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS EVENT

WHERE: Meet at Trapps Bridge 8:45am then proceed down Undercliff Road to Sleepy Hollow (Casa Emilio to A Long Walk for Man, including the Even Lovely boulder) at the far end of the Trapps. We can expect to walk down to Sleepy Hollow (about 15 minutes at a good pace) but a Ranger truck should be on hand to ferry packs and gear to the site.
Preserve entry fees will be waived for participants who aren’t members.

WHAT: Organized by the GCC and led by Mohonk Preserve Rangers and members of the volunteer Climbers Trail Crew (they build all the stairs from the Undercliff carriage road up to the base of the Trapps cliff), this day of giving back is all about stabilizing eroding, high traffic areas and improving trail access to specific bouldering and climbing areas within Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow is a very special, ecologically sensitive climbing area with a remote feel to it unlike anywhere else in the Trapps. The GCC is organizing this stewardship day in order to ensure recreational access is maintained in such a manner that Sleepy Hollow climbing and bouldering remains open into the future — it was only officially allowed to climb there starting in the 1980s. This is a great opportunity to give back to the land we love by taking responsibility for the impact we all have on the forest floor when we climb and boulder.

Plus, there will be a wealth of Sleepy Hollow climbing knowledge leading the stewardship crews and a tour of the area climbs will be a guaranteed highlight — a unique opportunity to expand your Trapps climbing knowledge!

Plus-plus at the end of the day is the annual, GCC Spring BBQ at the Visitors Center — a Gunks climbing community staple that is free to Access Fund / GCC affiliate members, $20 for non-members but free to the day’s volunteers! It starts at 5pm, so plan your day accordingly to make sure you arrive while there is still food and drink available.

BRING: Participants should dress appropriately for the day’s weather and dirty work, provide their own work gloves, and bring ample drinks and snacks / lunch food in light of the physical nature of the day’s project. Bring your climbing/bouldering gear if you plan to climb afterwards.

All tools necessary to the day’s work will be provided.

WHO: Because of the nature of the work and the sensitivity of the area, we are limiting the number of volunteer participants to 15.
