Join us for the 2026 Climber Steward Program at the Peter’s Kill climbing area of Minnewaska State Park. Modeled after successful programs by the Access Fund at New River Gorge, Red River Gorge, Indian Creek, and Yosemite Valley, this initiative brings together climbers who are passionate about protecting the places they love.
Now entering its third season, the Gunks Climber Stewards program has built a strong track record—receiving enthusiastically positive feedback from Minnewaska State Park staff and the broader climbing community alike.

Running from June through early November, volunteer stewards are trained by the Access Fund and park staff to engage with visitors, share knowledge about sensitive environmental concerns, and help orient climbers new to the area.
In return, stewards receive valuable perks including free park passes, guided tours of special areas within the park, access to climbing clinics, and a dedicated educational day with a guide. With a commitment of just three days over the season, it’s a rewarding way to give back, connect with the climbing community, and help ensure sustainable access for years to come.

What Climber Stewards Do
Climber Stewards are volunteer ambassadors who show up on weekends during the climbing season to connect with fellow climbers and promote responsible, sustainable access at the Gunks.
A typical volunteer day starts with a few hours of tabling at the park office—offering a free cup of coffee and friendly conversation about crag etiquette, cultural history, and tips for leaving no trace. After noon, stewards head into the park for informal “Crag Chats”, connecting with climbers throughout the day and helping paint the full picture of what it means to take care of this special place. And after their shift wraps up, they’re encouraged to stay and enjoy a climb themselves.
Stewards also log notes on park activity, tracking engagement numbers and key topics that come up—contributing to data that helps the GCC and Minnewaska make informed decisions about access and conservation for years to come.
